Hard drive wiping with a certificate for every drive
When you retire computers, cameras or recorders, the data on their drives goes with them unless someone removes it. We wipe or destroy every drive we pick up, log each one by serial number, and give you a data certificate that lists them all.
Hard drive wiping is part of every pickup we do for businesses across the Phoenix area.
Why deleting files or formatting isn't enough
Deleting a file, emptying the trash or doing a quick format usually removes only the drive's record of where the data is. The data itself stays on the drive until something writes over it, and recovery software can often bring it back.
That can include client files, email, saved passwords and security camera footage. The only way to know a drive is clean is to wipe it with a proper method and check the result, or to destroy it.
How we wipe each type of drive
Hard drives: NIST 800-88 drive wipe
Hard drives are overwritten following the NIST SP 800-88 "Clear" guideline, then verified. NIST SP 800-88 is a set of guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for removing data from storage.
SSDs
Solid-state drives store data differently from hard drives, so we erase them with the drive's built-in sanitize command.
Drives that can't be wiped
Drives that fail or can't be wiped are physically destroyed. We drill them, or send them to a shredding company and pass its certificate along to you.
Memory cards
Memory cards found in cameras and recorders are removed and wiped or destroyed.
Every drive is logged by serial number
Each drive is recorded by its serial number when we process it, so every drive from your pickup can be traced to what happened to it.
A data destruction certificate for small businesses
After your pickup, you get a data certificate. For each drive, it lists:
- The serial number
- The method used
- The tool used
- The date
- The technician
You also get a recycling certificate for the equipment that goes to our recycling partner.
